Phantom Echo: how it works
What it is: Phantom Echo lets the player in the Phantom role play back short clips of other players' voices as decoys during a round. It is an optional extra: it starts on, you can turn it off in Settings, and the game keeps working.
What is captured: Phantom Echo is ON by default, and the in-game Terms & Privacy screen explains it first. While it is on, the game records short clips of your voice (up to 10 seconds each) while you speak during a live round.
When it's captured: Only while Phantom Echo is on for you, and only during an active round, never in menus, the lobby or between rounds. A red microphone icon at the top of your screen shows whenever it is recording. The Best Moment replay has no icon. It is a separate feature, explained in the Privacy Notice.
Who receives it:
- The clip goes from your PC to the PC of the player hosting the match, over the match connection (through Unity Relay, or directly in a direct or LAN game). The host's PC may be in another country.
- The fact that a clip exists, who spoke it, and basic details (like its length) are visible only to the player currently in the Phantom role.
- The Phantom can listen to a clip privately, shorten it, and play it to the match as a decoy, or leave it to play from a spot on the map later in that round.
- Other players hear the clip only when the Phantom plays it, like a normal in-round sound. Your name is never shown when it plays.
- We never receive these clips. Nobody outside the match receives them.
No voice clone: the clips are short recordings of what you said. The game does not make a voiceprint or a voice clone, does not use your voice to train AI, and does not use it to recognize who you are.
Text of what was said (speech-to-text): If you leave Speech-to-text on in Settings > Voice > Phantom Echo Privacy (it is on by default) and a speech model file is installed on your PC, your own device turns each of your captured clips into a short text guess (up to 240 characters) plus a detected-language tag, using an offline model (whisper.cpp) that runs only on your computer. No cloud service is used. If you did not speak English, your device also produces an English version of the guess. That text is sent to the match host and shown only to the player in the Phantom role, inside the same temporary clip entry (the Phantom has to expand it to read it). It is never sent to us or any third party, never saved to disk, and is deleted with the clip. Without a model file, or with the setting off, no text is produced and everything else about Echo still works. The text is a machine guess: it may be wrong, and nobody checks or moderates the words.
When it's deleted:
- Automatically at the end of each round.
- Immediately if you turn Phantom Echo off (see below).
- Immediately if you leave or disconnect from the match.
- Clips exist in memory only. They are never written to your disk or anyone else's, and they are never stored on a server.
- A modified game or recording software could keep a clip. The game cannot stop that.
How to turn it on or off: Phantom Echo starts on, and the Terms & Privacy screen explains it before you play. If you had turned it off before, it stays off. You can turn it off, or back on, at any time in Settings > Voice > Phantom Echo Privacy, even in the middle of a round. Turning it off stops capture immediately and deletes anything currently stored. It does not take back a clip that was already played in a round that has already happened.
What still works if you turn it off: Everything. Turning Phantom Echo off does not restrict your ability to play any role, any map, or any other feature of the game.
