FAQ
Short answers to the questions players ask most. Cannot find yours? Read How to Play or try the search.
Getting started
What kind of game is it?
It is a funny multiplayer hide-and-seek game. One player is the Phantom and hides as a cursed shape that looks like a real object. The other players are Workers who search a haunted mall, hotel, museum or school. See How to Play.
How many players can play?
Up to 7 per room: 1 Phantom and up to 6 Workers. A round needs at least 2 players.
Can I play alone?
Yes, in training. Training is a practice round against bots, and it pays no Tokens. Real rounds need at least 2 players.
Are there bots in online rooms?
No. Bots are only in training. Quick Play never adds bots.
Is there a tutorial?
Yes. The game offers a training round the first time you play. Supervisor Bob teaches the Worker side and Grandpa Boo teaches the Phantom side. You can do it later too.
How long is a round?
The host chooses how long hiding and searching last. The Phantom hides first, then the Workers search.
How do I play with friends?
Host a room and share the room code, or invite a Steam friend. A host can make a room public or private, and lock it.
What is Quick Play?
Quick Play joins a public room that is waiting for players. If none is waiting, it makes a public room for you and you wait in the lounge. It looks for nearby rooms first.
Voice and chat
Do I need a microphone?
No. You can play with text chat and emotes. Voice chat is a bonus, and you can listen without talking.
Is voice chat on?
You join every room muted until you choose. Press M to mute or unmute. Voice is proximity voice, so you hear players who are near you. An unmuted mic is always live. There is no push to talk.
Can the Phantom talk?
The Phantom's mic stays off until a Hunt starts. Before that, the Phantom uses the Echo Mimic instead.
Is my voice recorded?
The Echo Mimic can replay short clips of what Workers said. Clips are made in the same match, stay in the match and are deleted at the end. A red mic icon shows while recording. You can turn it off at any time.
Can I mute other players?
Yes. You can mute a player's voice. Settings also has Mute strangers, which is useful in public rooms.
Is there a chat filter?
Yes, and it is on by default. Swear words keep their first letter and the rest is hidden. Slurs are fully hidden. It works on chat lines and player names.
Is there a streamer mode?
Yes. Turn it on in Settings under Privacy. It hides room codes until you hold the show button, hides codes typed in chat, and masks swears and links. It never hides anything you need to play.
Playing the Worker
How do I find the cursed shape?
Use the Flashlight and the Scanner, then look for objects that seem wrong. When you find a suspect, mark it for your team. See Playing the Worker and Scanner.
What if I confirm the wrong object?
Every Worker's tools lock for 10 seconds. Only your own vote drops. The Flashlight keeps working. See Mark and Confirm.
How do Workers win?
More than half of the Workers still in the round must confirm the right shape. If the Phantom leaves after the search began, the Workers win too.
What happens when the Phantom catches me?
It is a cartoon drag and there is no gore. You then spectate the rest of the round. Nobody comes back, so there is no revival. See Hunt.
Can I still help after I am caught?
Yes. You can talk to other caught players in the ghost room, and the living cannot hear you. You can also prank the Worker you are watching with a ghost or slime. You get a new prank every 20 seconds, and never during a Hunt.
The Phantom possessed my teammate. What now?
A teammate with the Wake-Up Kazoo can free them. They must be close and have a clear line.
Playing the Phantom
How do I design my shape?
Press Tab to open the shape designer. Pick a body, a face and colors, then place it where a real object would sit. See Playing the Phantom.
Can I copy a real prop?
Yes. The Cloner turns a real prop into your shape. It only works in a round, and the host can switch it off for the room. New Phantoms also get a small picker with ready-made disguises.
Can the Phantom go invisible?
Yes, for a short time with the Shape Cloak, once a round. It has fair tells. The shape still blocks the way, a faint shimmer shows up close, and the Scanner still finds it. See Shape Cloak.
How do I start a Hunt?
Press H when a Hunt is ready. A 3 second warning plays, then the Hunt lasts 40 seconds. See Hunt.
Can I share my shape?
Yes. Every shape has a share code that starts with "PS1-". Another Phantom can paste it into the designer. See share codes.
What if the Phantom leaves?
If the Phantom leaves after the search began, the Workers win. If the Phantom leaves before that, the round is voided and nobody wins.
Items and progression
Are tools locked?
No. All 19 tools are free from the start. Levels and Tokens only buy looks and emotes. See All tools.
Is it pay to win?
No. Tools are never sold, and every player gets every tool. Tokens only buy looks and emotes.
How do I get Tokens?
You earn them by playing rounds. Shift pay comes with every round, with bonuses for winning, making it out and your first round of the day. Details are on Levels, Tokens and Shop.
How many levels are there?
50. Levels unlock items in the Shop, and Tokens buy them. See Levels.
How many achievements are there?
33, and none are hidden. See Achievements.
Tech and settings
What are the system requirements?
See System requirements.
Which platforms does it run on?
Windows on Steam. See System requirements.
Does it support a controller?
Partly. Some actions have no controller button yet. See Controller controls.
Can I rebind keys?
Yes, most of them. Escape, the number keys and the mouse wheel are fixed. See Controls.
What languages does the game have?
English, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Russian, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America), Portuguese (Brazil), German, Japanese, French and Korean. Map names stay in English.
Are there graphics settings?
Yes. There are four presets: Low, Medium, High and Ultra. Settings that change what you can see are the same on every preset, so low settings are not unfair.
Safety and age
Is it scary?
It is a funny horror-comedy and it is family friendly. There is no gore. When a Phantom catches a Worker, it is a cartoon drag and the Worker watches the rest of the round as a spectator.
Is it for kids?
The tone is silly, not gory. Public rooms are for players 13 and older, so younger players should use private rooms with people they know.
How do I report a player?
Use the mute options in the game and the tools Steam gives you on the player's profile. Hosts can also lock their room.
